Following a successful Design Competition and Public Consultation, we are delighted to announce that Alan B Herriot has been selected from a shortlist of 5 amazing designs, to complete the Mandela memorial.
This follows a Public Consultation, detailed Evaluation and review by a panel of Judges including the Lord Provost of Glasgow, the High Commissioner for South Africa in the UK, NMSMF Chair and
Officers, our Board has appointed Alan B Herriot to create the memorial to Nelson Mandela in Glasgow. The shortlist of 5 designs showed amazing creative talent. Alan’s design was deemed to encapsulate Mandela’s spirit, his strength, endurance, resilience and capacity for compassion and reconciliation.

Next Steps
We will now work with Alan to develop his design which will be cast at Powderhall Bronze foundry in Edinburgh. The next phase of activity will include:
• Finalising Planning Conditions
• Confirming Foundation Design
• Placing a detailed order for the granite plinth to be produced by Fyfe Glenrock (Laings Group) in Old
Meldrum
• Scheduling the installation of foundations & subsequent
works
• Continued fundraising towards the unveiling event &
continuation of educational activities.
TIMESCALE
We anticipate that we will unveil the final work on 9th October 2026 to coincide with the anniversary of Mandela’s visit to Glasgow to collect the Freedoms of 9 UK cities.
