Prisoner of Apartheid, Freeman of Glasgow: 40th Anniversary of Mandela’s Freedom of Glasgow

This special video launched on Wednesday 4 August at 6.30pm to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Glasgow’s historic awarding of the Freedom of the City to Nelson Mandela – the first in the world to do so. If you missed it, the video will remain here so you can still see it.

Brian Filling and Michael Kelly, key people in making the Freedom of Glasgow possible 40 years ago, discuss the background of how it was achieved (along with archive photos and clips), the events that followed, and the role in the fight against apartheid.

There are messages from Lord Provost Philip Braat and South African High Commissioner Nomatemba Tambo and music at Robben Island prison from a soloist from the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra. Also features Jim Cathcart’s iconic banner created in 1981 to celebrate the event.

After the screening, which we hope you will share with friends, the video will remain here and on Facebook and Youtube.
