The following information has been sent to all businesses in Nelson Mandela Place as the unveiling of the Nelson Mandela Memorial Statue comes ever closer.
In line with previous communication with businesses in Nelson Mandela Place, a new statue to Nelson Mandela will be unveiled in this civic square as per schedule on 9th October 2026 at 4 pm.
The Unveiling Event will be a public event, and many people are expected to attend. It will start at 4 pm and is expected to last an hour with attendees dispersing soon afterwards.
We have planned our approach to minimise any disruption to local businesses although commercial venues may wish to prepare for additional customer footfall.
Key Facts
• Road closure will be in place from 29th Sept for two weeks but the footpaths will always remain open. Access to the surrounding premises will be maintained at all times.
• Week 1 will be the installation of the monument with the installation of a time capsule.
• Week 2 will be the installation of the staging etc in readiness for the unveiling event on 9th October at 4pm.
• Road will be fully re-opened by Monday 12th October.
• Friday 9th October: The Unveiling ceremony will start at 4 pm and last around an hour. This will comprise of some music and short speeches over a PA system and will be attended by the Lord Provost and other key guests.
• All required Glasgow City Council Road Closure and Events permits are in place.
• Police liaison has taken place, and the event will be closely managed by stewards.
• The staging will be removed immediately after the event finishes.
