Mandela centenary exhibition at the Lighthouse

Mandela exhibitionThe Lighthouse in Glasgow is holding a preview evening/reception for the Mandela Centenary Exhibition on Wednesday 30 January, 6pm – 8pm.  The link to the Eventbrite booking page is at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/nelson-mandela-the-centenary-exhibition-preview-tickets-54844731067  The Lighthouse is at 11 Mitchell Lane, Glasgow G1 3NU.

This is the very large exhibition on the life of Mandela, brought from the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg last July to show at the South Bank in London, and then shown also in Cardiff.  We had been hoping to find a venue in Scotland, and the opportunity to show it in The Lighthouse came up quite suddenly and at short notice, and we are delighted about it.

There are 48 large panels, covering every stage of Mandela’s life.  We will have a room just off the main display area for some additional material about activity in Scotland during the anti-apartheid struggle, and there will be information material and donation collection boxes for the Mandela Scottish Memorial.

On 11 February, the anniversary of Mandela’s release, there will be a showing at The Lighthouse of the film “Life is Wonderful: Mandela’s Unsung Heroes” about Denis Goldberg and other stalwarts of the struggle.

The Director, Nick Stadlen, is coming to the screening and will take part in a Question and Answer session immediately after it.  The showing will be in the evening, probably at 7pm, and more information will follow.

The exhibition itself will open to the public on 25th January and run to very early March. Admission is free, and opening times are 10.30am – 5pm each Monday to Saturday, and 12 noon – 5pm on Sundays.
