On this day in 1997, Edinburgh joined Glasgow, Aberdeen, Midlothian and Dundee as Scottish councils giving Mandela their Freedoms to Nelson Mandela. In 1986 Edinburgh had erected the Woman and Child statue in Festival Square “To honour all those killed or imprisoned for their stand against apartheid”.
